Analyisis 3 of magazine front cover.

This is a 'Billboard' magazine with Beyonce featured on the front cover of it.

The masthead on this magazine is spread right across the top of the page, starting from left to right as this is the way people read. It is in a large text size and is in white so that it stands out from the background . It also has the colours red, yellow, blue and green in the gaps in the letters of the word 'board', therefore it stands out more as the colour would catch readers attention. The color connotation to these colours are;
WHITE: It is considered to be the color of perfection. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness and it usually has a positive connotation.
RED: It is associated with energy, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. It brings text/images to the foreground.
YELLOW: It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow produces a warming effect and arouses cheerfulness. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention.
BLUE: It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
GREEN: It is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony and freshness. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance.

The main image of this magazine is of Beyonce against a black background and a stoplight shining on her so you just see her shadow and there is some writing on the black background behind her highlighted by the spotlight. You can see the sort of outfit that she is wearing, which is a vest and a skirt, or a dress. She is stood in an dominate stance, with her legs apart and her hands on her hips, and if you look closely you notice that she is holding a microphone in her left hand, and it looks as though she is looking towards the camera. She is also stood in the centre of the page, and that is where the reader's eye is drawn immediately drawn to. This is quite effective as it looks like it part of a stage production, especially since you see that she is holding a microphone.

The main headline is about Beyonce. Just underneath the main image their is a caption that says "many words describe you only one word defines you" this links with the background of the main image which is highlighted by the spotlight as there is lots of different words. Underneath this is "BEYONCE" in big, capitals and is in the colour gold so it stands out more than the other pieces of text, and then you see that it is for "woman of the year" and she is getting congratulated on being woman of the year. This is all at the bottom, centre of the page, just under the main image. In the bottom left hand side of the page you can see the bar code, price and websites, http://www.billboard.com/ and http://www.billboard.biz/. All this will attract the attention of the readers and will draw them in as they will want to know more.

Camera Angles
The camera is a medium long shot, as you can see Beyonce's shadow from the knees upwards. It looks like Beyounce is facing towards the camera with her hands on her hips and one hip is higher up than the other, she is stood in a strong stance.
Conventions
The music magazine is iconic music masthead 'Billboard' this could be a way of advertising as billboards advertise things normally. The masthead is spread right across the top of the front cover, starting from left to right as this is the usual way that people read, above the masthead in the right hand corner is the word 'advertisement' in white letters. Images that are suitable for the magazine (bands, artists etc) this lets the reader know that the magazine they are looking at is related to music, this is why 'Billboard' have 'Beyonce' on their front cover. Related music information to help the readers know what music genre the magazine is based around, this magazine has purely used the shadow of Beyonce's body and her name is big gold capital letters to get the readers interested. The fonts and colours used that suit their target audience and makes it more presentable to their audience, 'Billboard' has used big bold fonts that are bright and stand out to their audience, they also use bright colours to highlight parts that they want their audience to notice, and the masthead has different colours to it so that it stands out more than a plain masthead would.

*I*
The magazine is called 'Billboard' and the publisher for this magazine is Prometheus Global Media and the company is called  and is based in America. It was originally founded by William H. Donaldson and James H. Hennegan in 1894.

*I*
The magazine features popular music acts and quality 'in' music and therefore may cost more than what some other music magazines might. On the front cover is Beyonce you can't see her properly, all you can see is the shadow of her body, because she is so well known that you don't need to see her face or what she is wearing you know who she is, and she is an iconic figure so you know she will look good and be wearing something nice anyways.

*A*
Age
The age that the magazine is aimed at is those who are working and are 20+ years as the acts featured are well known and popular however it will cost a reasonable prise so therefore young adults should be able to afford it.
Gender
The magazine is aimed at both women and men as the acts featured have fan bases of both women and men.
Social Class
The social class that would buy this magazine would be from lower middle class upwards to upper middle class as they earn enough money to be able to afford the magazine every week or month.
*R*
The front cover also connects with music, the genre that it is and the target audience. You can see that it is to do with music as the magazine has 'Beyonce' is on the front cover and you can tell that it is going to be about her, and as he is so well known people will be interested and will want to read about her that's why they don't need to show her full body and can just show the shadow of her body and have her name in big capital gold letters underneath her picture. Also it connects to the target because the target audience will be fans of 'Beyonce' and regular readers.

Analysis 2 of contents page.

This a 'NME' contents page. The contents page, unlike some other magazines, doesn't always follow the house style of the front cover as the front cover varies the colour scheme, however the contents page always stays the same and follows the house style of the website www.nme-magazine.com.

The colours on this contents page are red, black, white and a bit of yellow. The connotations for these colours are;

RED: It is associated with energy, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red is used to indicate courage. Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. It is also associated with willpower, leadership and courage.

BLACK: Is associated with power, elegance, formality and mystery. Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color (black tie, black Mercedes). Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth. Black contrasts well with bright colors. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors.

WHITE: Is associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity. It is considered to be the color of perfection. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. White can represent a successful beginning. In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the color of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products.

YELLOW: It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.
Yellow produces a warming effect and arouses cheerfulness. Bright, pure yellow is an attention getter, which is the reason taxicabs are painted this color. When overused, yellow may have a disturbing effect.

The masthead of the magazine 'NME' is also on the contents page and is placed in the top left hand corner of the page where it is placed on the front cover, it is following the house style of red, black and white which is also the colour scheme on the website. The masthead is red with a white border around it. There is also a date that is placed just underneath the contents heading at the top right hand corner of the page.

Underneath the masthead on the left hand side of the page there is a long red box with the word 'Band Index' in capital white letters, and then listed underneath this is a list a bands, the listed bands are in black text highlighted by a white background, which is highlighted by the red box. On the right hand side of the page there are five oer headings in big, white bold text that is highlighted by a black box. The first one is 'NEWS' and underneath there is a a few brief descriptions of news that will be in the magazine. Then there is 'RADAR', and 'REVIEWS' that will be a regular. After this is 'LIVE!' which may be about what music acts you can see live ad then underneath this is 'FEATURES' which is features and new each issue. There is  a brief description underneath the article headings for the features and there will be page numbers next to it so you know what page to go to for the feature you want to read about. Further down the page there is some red text that says 'PLUS' which will be adding more information, and then a red box with white text in it about 'UKs no.1 gig guide' and then page it starts on.

There are two main images that will be the main feature of the magazine, both the shot are mid shot as you can't see their full bodies and can only see up to their knees. The images are similar and are of two different people in the same band singing and one is also playing the guitar. They are dressed quite similar and you can see that they are doing a concert as you can see that they are performing on a stage. You can tell that these images are based around the main story as there is a short paragraph with the heading above it saying '...Oasis kicked off their world tour' so the paragraph will just be there the attract the attention of the readers and so they'll read it and then will want to know more and therefore will read on.

Underneath this there is a big black box with a few images of other issues of their magazine and next to it in big, bold, yellow letters saying 'SUBSCRIBE TODAY' and in a smaller but the same style is says 'SAVE 33%'. Underneath the magazine images there is small white text which will be telling the readers how they can subscribe today, and the cost of the magazines.

I believe that this is a good use of space and it contains all the useful information that you would expect from a contents page without it looking too cramped and tight together.

*L*
Camera Angles
The camera is in a similar angle for both the main images, as they are facing at the side of each of the band members face, so your seeing them from their right side. It is a mid shot photo for both the images, as you can only see up to their knees on the photo. Both the people are stood on an angle, looking away from the camera as they look as though they are at a concert which would link with the story underneath the images.
Conventions
The music magazine's iconic music masthead 'NME' is also present on the contents page in the same place that it is on the front cover. It is placed at top left hand corner of the page as you normally read from left to right so this makes it easier for the readers to read. The suitable images for the magazine are also present on the contents page as well as suitable images being on the front cover,so that when the readers open the contents page they also know that it is a music magazine. Related music information is also present on the contents page to help the readers know what music genre the magazine is based around, and they know what is featured. The fonts and colours used that suit their target audience and makes it more presentable to their audience, 'NME' has used big bold fonts that are bright and stand out more to the audience and the front cover and the font and colours have been consistent on the contents as well. They have regulars and features like contents pages normally do. The features are clearly visible as they have a title above them highlighted in a black with a white text, this contrast well and underneath the heading the features are listed . It is the same for the regulars as well as underneath the list of features the regulars heading and list is underneath, in the same layout.

*I*
The magazine is called 'NME' magazine and the publishing house for this magazine is IPC Media and is based in the United Kingdom.

*I*
'NME' stands for enemy,  this could be looked at as enemy of other music magazine, other music acts and other music genres. The magazine is normal paper and therefore shouldn't cost a lot. In the main images both the band member are dressed in a similar way so they look as a unit.

*A*
Age
The age that the magazine is aimed at is those who are working and are 20+ years as the style of the magazine would suit that age range and the acts that are present in the magazine are well known by those ages. Also as the magazine is just paper and nothing really expensive like photo paper it won't cost so much and so that age range will be able to afford it, since it costs £2.20.
Gender
The magazine is aimed at both women and men as the magazine's colour scheme relates to both sexes, also both men and female will be fans of the acts and the magazine's music genre.
Social Class
The social class that would buy this magazine would be from lower middle class upwards to upper middle class as they earn enough money to be able to afford the magazine every week or month.

*R*
The contents page also connects with music, the genre that it is and the target audience. You can see that it is to do with music as there are reviews, features and regulars on music, also main images of a music band. It also connects to the target audience because the target audience will be fans of the band featured and regular readers will still buy.

Analysis 2 of magazine cover.

This is a 'Rolling Stones' front cover with the 'Black Eyed Peas' featured on it.

The masthead starts from the top left hand corner and finishes at the top right hand corner, being centered in the middle, it is big text and is in the colour red with a white and black lining around it so that it stands out more, also so that it is easy to see for the readers. The red colour connotation means that red is associated with energy, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. The date and price is placed in the top right hand corner above the masthead.

The main image is a wide shot of the 'Black Eyed Peas' so that all four members of the group are able to fit into the shot, they are all faces towards the camera in a strong stance. Their stance matches what they are wearing, as the are wearing black leather suits they look quite army like, which symbolises that they are very strong, powering and dominate, however Fergie (the female member of the band) is wearing a leotard showing her cleavage and her legs which gives her femininity at the same time, this may attract male readers as some may find this attractive. She is also wearing silver high heels, a arm bracelet and some silver earrings which gives her femininity as well. One of male members is wearing silver studded sunglasses which gives them a 'cool' kind of effect. What they are wearing matches well with the masthead colour connotation (strength, power and determination) they also look in fashion as they are wearing what is 'in' at the moment (army style). The clothes that they are wearing in this shot mirrors the genre of music they produce,of pop, dance and up beat rock and the clothes imitate this. In the image their heads cover part of the masthead, which shows that the magazine is so well known that it doesn't matter if their audience can't see the full masthead.

The main headline 'BLACK EYED PEAS, the science of global pop domination' also links well with the main image of the 'Black Eyed Peas' as they are dressed as though they are ready to take over the world. The group's name is in big bold white letters and underneath in smaller yellow text is a glimpse of the story.  Even though the sub heading isn't very big and bold it stands out because of the text being in yellow, which contracts well with the white background and heading, and the black outfits that the 'Black Eyed Peas' are wearing. Above the group's headline there is another one in the same style but about '40 reasons to get excited about music' which shows that it is a music magazine. The fact that the headlines are as big and bold as they are it will attract the attention of the years and then when they read the headlines and the sub headings they will want to know more as they are left on sort of a cliff hanger, 'the science of global pop domination' after reading this the readers will want to know how they did.

The magazine features popular music acts and quality 'in' music and therefore may cost more than what some other music magazines might. On the front cover the four members of the band are all dressed in a similar, however wearing individual objects that make them stand out and gives them an individual look.

The smaller image is a long shot image so that you can see his full body from a distance.
Conventions
The music magazine's iconic music masthead 'Q' is also present on the contents page in the same place that it is on the front cover. It is placed at top left hand corner of the page as you normally read from left to right so this makes it easier for the readers to read. It is the same for the regulars as well as underneath the list of features the regulars heading and list is underneath, in the same layout and there is a small image near it to enlighten the readers further like there is for the features has an image which is bigger and therefore the main image.

*I*
The magazine is called 'Q' magazine and the publishing house for this magazine is Bauer Media Group which is a large German publishing company based in Hamburg.

*I*
'Q' stands for 'q the music' meaning start the music now, it could also stand for quality, and quality music therefore it would cost more than most music magazines as the paper of the magazine is like photo paper rather than just normal printing paper, and so the magazine wants the readers to know this so they place the masthead on the contents page as well,so this follows the house style. In the main image all the members are dressed in a similar way so they look as a unit, apart from you can see which member is the main member as they are wearing sunglasses. The sunglasses symbolise a rockstar sense which portrays to the readers the genre of music they create and the genre of music the magazine advertises.

*A*
Age
The age that the magazine is aimed at is those who are working and are 30+ years as you would have to know who the acts are in the magazine to want to buy it and that age range would know the majority of the acts.  You also know that the magazine is aimed at that age range as the magazine costs £3.99 therefore people of a younger generation wouldn't be able to afford that amount of money for a magazine.

Analysis 1 of magazine cover.

This is a double sided front cover, U2 are in the 'red corner' and the MUSE are in the 'blue corner'.

One side of the front cover has the group MUSE on it, two of the band members are stood further back than the main band member. They are facing inwards with their feet apart and looking towards the camera and making eye contact with the audience. The main band member who it further forwards is stood on an angle also with his feet slightly apart and looking towards the camera making eye contact. The camera shot is a wide shot so that you are able to see everybody that is meant to be in the camera shot. They are all dressed smart to mirror the masthead of the magazine Q, Q could be interpreted as quality which means that MUSE produce quality music and that they dress in quality clothes so it all links in with the magazine masthead, however the band's music genre is also considered and portrayed in some of the clothing items this is too show their music genre a bit better. The text on the MUSE'S cover is in black apart from the more important parts that are in white and highlighted by being in a blue box, or for example the number 50 and the + sign is in blue writing with white text underneath. On the cover it lists the '50 acts you must see at Glastonbury' this is to attract the attention of music lovers and those who are going to Glastonbury. It has a quote and a story featured on it to get to readers attention and intrigued to more, as they only have a snippet of the story, they are left in a cliff hanger. There is also a quote from the band saying "we'll be the first band in space!" The masthead is in the top left hand corner and the band's name is in big white capital letters with the words 'in the blue corner...' above it, it is also in a blue box with white text, the light in the background is slightly blue tinted to emphasis the colour more.

On the other side of the magazine front cover is U2. This page seems to contain the same amount of information and similar features. The main image is different from the MUSE'S as there is four band members and so it can be more symmetrical, but with that you still notice who is the main band member, as one band member is stood the furthest back and then another member is slightly in front and they are at the same level and distance from the camera and are stood in a similar position. The other member is stood closer upstage with their body facing outwards but is still looking directly at the camera, and the clear main band member is closest to the camera with his sunglasses on whereas the other band members are not wearing any glasses, and is also wearing a leather jacket as well as a top, with a much stronger body position with his thumbs in his pockets. This is also a wide shot so that all members are seen within the shot. U2 are a little more dressed down then what the MUSE were they look more rock with the black and leather jackets, also with the main band member wearing sunglasses it gives a stronger sense of rock whereas MUSE portrayed a stronger sense punk, even though both bands produce the same music genre. There is less black text on the U2 cover as there was on the MUSE cover. However there is still white text that is surrounded by the colour red to give a sense of two different sides, MUSE vs. U2. U2's cover also feature the '50 acts you must see at Glastonbury', but list different acts to the MUSE cover. They also feature a different story that is brand new to the music magazine and have a quote from U2 "we're still more potent than is legal", and then masthead is in the top left hand corner and the band's name is next to it with the text 'in the red corner' which is also in white writing but with a red box around it, above it. The main picture also has a tint a red light upon it.

Both magazine covers are similar to the way they have being set out and what is presented on it. The covers have being presented as U2.vs.MUSE  especially as they have but the different text and light colours, also it is immediately obvious when you read the words 'in the red corner' and 'in the blue corner'. Also how each one has said a quote, and those quotes are as if they are trying to beat the opposing band. If you open out the two front covers it looks as though they are standing back to back. Q magazine may have done the two covers within one magazine so that they attract twice as many readers and they gain the attention of U2 and MUSE fans.

*L*
Camera Angles
The camera is in the same position for both the 'MUSE' and 'U2' front, the groups are stood on different angles. For the 'U2' cover they have mainly used the colour red, the connotation for this colour is that it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions, also items related to sports and high physical activity. However for the 'MUSE' cover they have mainly used the colour blue and the connotation for that is that it is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom and confidence, Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity. It is opposed to emotionally warm colors like red, orange, and yellow; blue is linked to consciousness and intellect. So all these connotations link well with what the theme is of 'U2' vs 'MUSE', red and blue are opposed to each other and so are the music bands.
Conventions
The music magazine is iconic music masthead 'Q' as this could stand for quality music and this is placed at the top left hand corner of the front cover. Images that are suitable for the magazine (bands, artists etc) this lets the reader know that the magazine they are looking at is related to music, this is why 'Q' have 'MUSE' and 'U2' on their front cover. Related music information to help the readers know what music genre the magazine is based around, this magazine has used the acts that are going to Glastonbury. The fonts and colours used that suit their target audience and makes it ore presentable to their audience, 'Q' has used big bold fonts that are bright and stand out more to the audience.

*I*
The magazine is called 'Q' magazine and the publishing house for this magazine is Bauer Media Group which is a large German publishing company based in Hamburg.

*I*
'Q' could stand for quality, and quality music therefore it would cost more than most music magazines as the paper of the magazine is like photo paper rather than just normal printing paper. It also stands for 'q the music' meaning 'queue the music' which insinuates start the music. On the front of this two sided front cover is the 'MUSE' and 'U2' facing in opposite directions, are dressed in a similar way and creating the same genre of music, so it is like they are VS. each other, young vs older, blue vs red etc. The synergy works well here by 'U2' and 'MUSE' promoting each other in a way.

*A*

The social class that would buy this magazine would be upper middle class and middle class as they earn good money and would be able to pay the amount that the magazine costs every week or month.

*R*
The front cover also connects with music, the genre that it is and the target audience. You can see that it is to do with music as two music acts are on the front cover and they have a list of other acts at Glastonbury. Also it connects to the target because the target audience will be fans of 'MUSE' and 'U2' and regular readers.
